How to make garden border from brick

Both concrete and brick pavers make a simple, handsome border and work well as edging material too. They're ideal when you want a wide border that keeps grass out of the garden, yet allows flowers and other plants to spill over without intruding onto the grass. You're less likely to chop them up with the lawn mower.
How To :
Step 1 : Lay out the edge of the border with a garden hose, using the brick pattern as a spacer. Make curves gradual and smooth.
Step 2 : Dig a 4-in. deep trench about an inch wider than the brick pattern, using a square spade. Cut the edge along the grass smooth and square.

Grow a sunflower house for the kids to play in.

A sunflower house is an easy and exciting project for you and your kids. I am currently growing my second one in the same spot. I marked off an 8'x8' square. I double dug a furrow, hoed a shallow moat around the furrow, and put in sunflowers which I had sprouted into seedlings elsewhere. I alternate a mammoth variety which grows about eight feet, and a small variety which grows about 4 feet. The tall ones impress the kids by growing taller than they are and they provide abundant shade. The kids enjoy looking closely at the flowers, eye-to-eye, on the shorter ones.

How to Gardening With Dad

Chances are your Dad is the no-nonsense type who doesn’t like to waste time on things he doesn’t care about. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t like gardening, it means that digging, tilling, weeding, and watering are just chores that take him away from things he’d rather be doing. If you want to get him out in the garden, you should plant an easy care garden with rugged, sturdy plants that are drought, pest, and heat-tolerant and don’t need a lot of care and attention.

How to Build a Paver Path

Take stock of your project area and the paver size, type and quantities you’ll need to complete your path. The instructions here are for laying a path 20′ long and 3′ wide, but can be easily scaled up or down depending on your space. If you know the length and width of the path you’re creating, finding the square footage is a simple matter of multiplying the length by the width—in this case, 20′ long by 3′ wide, giving us a total area of 60 square feet.

To cover that space, we’ve used a total of twenty-eight 12″ x 12″ paver stones. We’ve laid the pavers in pairs of two, leaving a 6″ gap between each pair. Between the pavers and the walkway edge, that leaves a gap of 3″ on one side and 6″ on the other, which we’ve alternated for a staggered effect

MATERIALS

28 12-inch x 12-inch paver stones or step stones
40 bags of paver base
12 bags of paver leveling sand

little cupcake in 'Concrete Garden Projects'

What says “I like you” more than a concrete cupcake? They look sweet and are half-baked in a humorous way. In terms of potential holiday table decor and DIY gifts, these little treats — one of many in the new book “Concrete Garden Projects” — have all the ingredients.

Concrete Garden ProjectsPart of the appeal of Malin Nilsson and Camilla Arvidsson’s book is simplicity: Most of the pots, vases, candle holders, stepping stones and decorative figurines in the book were created using the same easy steps: Find an interesting mold, fill it with concrete, let it dry.

If you’ve picked your molds well, the results look great. The pots pictured here were made with jumbo cupcake molds made of silicone, which was firm enough to hold its shape but pliable enough to remove the concrete with incredible ease.

How To Lay a Brick path

Also from ‘This Old House’, how to lay a gravel path. I would use this material for a more casual home, but remember to choose gravel that compacts together for easy walking. Round pea gravel is not easy to walk in!

How To Diagonal Brick Edging

For creating an attractive border, bricks can be laid diagonally. For this, a trench is dug and several inches of coarse sand is added for drainage. Bricks are positioned at an angle of about 45 degrees in the trench such that they are half-exposed. The trench is then filled with soil and packed down firmly. Similarly, all the bricks are laid in the adjoining beds.

How To Roses in Spuds

First of all, I had no idea you could grow a rose bush just from the trimmings of another bush. I love all of this new found information — I’ve never been so excited about my garden! Push the bottom ends of your rose trimmings into a small potato to help it retain moisture as it develops roots.
