DIY Garden Hanging Bed

I love the idea of a hanging bed within the garden! I can’t think of another DIY project that would be more appreciated or well used! Especially as the long days of summer come upon us, laying out on a comfie “bed” while enjoying the weather, nature and the scent and sight of my garden seems like Heaven. Oh, and a good book too! Here are a couple of great tutorials on building a hanging bed or swing bed. It’s easier than it looks, basically just requiring a sturdy overhanging support, a frame, some chain or rope…and a comfie mattress or pad and pillows! This could make a great front porch project as well.

How to Here’s the full, fire pit

She gets paid hourly. One water break. We run a tight ship. The next series of steps moved smoothly since all of the prep work was done. If you’re following along at home, make sure between all of these steps you take time to place a level on each possible stone combination. The rule of thumb is if the first layer of stones is even, you shall move forward to the next level. Sorta like Super Mario 3, but without having to beat Bowser first. Isn’t it pretty awesome? I can’t believe I ever doubted the beautifulness of the fire pit. Lesson learned. I’m so proud of Steve and our new backyard attraction, and I can’t wait to have our first marshmallow-roasting session.

How to natural water gardens

As anyone who has snorkeled can attest, the cool aquamarine light underwater casts an enchanted glow on everything in its domain. Perhaps this explains the allure of water gardens. Small freshwater gardens are fun to create and simple to care for. And all you need are a few floating or submerged greens in a vintage aquarium, an apothecary jar, or a sleek glass cylinder.

Grow Hydrangea From Cutting

First  Find a hydrangeas and cut some small branches.

2. Place your cuttings in water, at least for an hour. Then Cut the top and the top of each leave.

3. take a flower pot. And place a coffee filter inside the pot. This will prevent the soil from escaping and it will keep the soil moist.

4. Mix potting soil, manure and compose. I used 1/2 of potting soil, 1/4 of manure and 1/4 of compose.

5. Place the cutting in the pot.

6. Water those babies. My daughter love this part!

7. After the soil is moist use two sticks and place them in the pot. They have to be taller than the cutting.

8. Put the ziplock bag on top of the plant. Make sure to use a big enough bag and that the leaves or the plant aren't touching the bag. That is what the sticks are for!

9. Place them in a shaded area where thy don't receive direct sunlight. I put them in my enclose porch in the floor. Make sure to keep an eye on them and water them.

10. After 3 weeks your cuttings should have roots and they are ready to put outside. Leave them in the pot, outside the bag in sunlight for one more week. After that they should be ready to plant! Enjoy!

How to potato harvest!

I just returned from a week-long trip to Utah and I had a blast with friends and family. It’s nice to be home with my family and be in my garden again. I was so anxious to get home and harvest my potatoes because my husband said they were ready. We dug them up yesterday afternoon and I was happy to have a great yield. I got 34 potatoes, counting a really tiny one! It was so much fun growing them and I will for sure grow them again. To see the process of  growing yukon gold potatoes click on the potato category to the right for older blog posts.

I will plant sweet potatoes in this bin next week. I tried growing a sweet potato slip like I did last year but it never sprouted. I found a farm that sells sweet potato plants online and ordered 12 plants for $13. It is George’s Plant Farm in Tennessee and here is the link if you want to order some. I ordered the vardeman variety and I have never tried it, but it sounded like a great type to grow. I plan to plant three bins of sweet potatoes!

On a side note I have discovered many, many long-lost comments in my spam folder. I didn’t know they were there and now feel so much blog love! In the next few days I will answer the questions in the various posts. Thanks for being such kind readers! I feel connected to fellow gardeners like me that just want to grow something. My garden and this blog has certainly been a fun journey for me. Best wishes to all and happy gardening!
