How to Recover Your Patio with Envirotile

If you’re looking for an environmentally friendly way to spruce up your patio space, consider covering that concrete slab with attractive tiles made entirely of recycled materials. Multy Home diverts over 2.5 million tons of tires from landfills to produce their green products, including the Envirotiles line of durable outdoor tiles. They can be installed on top of existing outdoor surfaces, on level dirt, and can even be put down in basement areas inside your home. We asked Above Average Joe of the Home Depot Garden Club Forums to help demonstrate how easy it can be to install Environtiles on a concrete patio surface.

Grow Squash, Cucumbers and Melons Vertically

If you are planning to plant cucumbers, melons, or squash in your vegetable garden this year, think vertically!

The main thing you want avoid are any varieties that are labeled or marked “Bush Variety” because those won’t climb properly.

Look for a “Vining Variety” because you’ll want to make sure it can climb your trellis, stake, or netting properly.

Here are some standard varieties that will do well:

Organic Gardening Beginner's Manual

Here's the ultimate "Take-You-By-The-Hand" beginner's gardening manual for creating and managing your own organic garden. Even if you know nothing about organic gardening.... so you can get back your health and energy and save a stack of money.

You're going to learn that organic gardening can greatly improve your health and energy levels while really lowering your weekly food bills, and it only takes about half an hour per week.

If you're like me you probably hate the idea of eating foods (and providing them for your family) that may have been grown with chemicals.

DIY Garden Hanging Bed

I love the idea of a hanging bed within the garden! I can’t think of another DIY project that would be more appreciated or well used! Especially as the long days of summer come upon us, laying out on a comfie “bed” while enjoying the weather, nature and the scent and sight of my garden seems like Heaven. Oh, and a good book too! Here are a couple of great tutorials on building a hanging bed or swing bed. It’s easier than it looks, basically just requiring a sturdy overhanging support, a frame, some chain or rope…and a comfie mattress or pad and pillows! This could make a great front porch project as well.

How to Here’s the full, fire pit

She gets paid hourly. One water break. We run a tight ship. The next series of steps moved smoothly since all of the prep work was done. If you’re following along at home, make sure between all of these steps you take time to place a level on each possible stone combination. The rule of thumb is if the first layer of stones is even, you shall move forward to the next level. Sorta like Super Mario 3, but without having to beat Bowser first. Isn’t it pretty awesome? I can’t believe I ever doubted the beautifulness of the fire pit. Lesson learned. I’m so proud of Steve and our new backyard attraction, and I can’t wait to have our first marshmallow-roasting session.

Grow Hydrangea From Cutting

First  Find a hydrangeas and cut some small branches.

2. Place your cuttings in water, at least for an hour. Then Cut the top and the top of each leave.

3. take a flower pot. And place a coffee filter inside the pot. This will prevent the soil from escaping and it will keep the soil moist.

4. Mix potting soil, manure and compose. I used 1/2 of potting soil, 1/4 of manure and 1/4 of compose.

5. Place the cutting in the pot.

6. Water those babies. My daughter love this part!

7. After the soil is moist use two sticks and place them in the pot. They have to be taller than the cutting.

8. Put the ziplock bag on top of the plant. Make sure to use a big enough bag and that the leaves or the plant aren't touching the bag. That is what the sticks are for!

9. Place them in a shaded area where thy don't receive direct sunlight. I put them in my enclose porch in the floor. Make sure to keep an eye on them and water them.

10. After 3 weeks your cuttings should have roots and they are ready to put outside. Leave them in the pot, outside the bag in sunlight for one more week. After that they should be ready to plant! Enjoy!

How to potato harvest!

I just returned from a week-long trip to Utah and I had a blast with friends and family. It’s nice to be home with my family and be in my garden again. I was so anxious to get home and harvest my potatoes because my husband said they were ready. We dug them up yesterday afternoon and I was happy to have a great yield. I got 34 potatoes, counting a really tiny one! It was so much fun growing them and I will for sure grow them again. To see the process of  growing yukon gold potatoes click on the potato category to the right for older blog posts.

I will plant sweet potatoes in this bin next week. I tried growing a sweet potato slip like I did last year but it never sprouted. I found a farm that sells sweet potato plants online and ordered 12 plants for $13. It is George’s Plant Farm in Tennessee and here is the link if you want to order some. I ordered the vardeman variety and I have never tried it, but it sounded like a great type to grow. I plan to plant three bins of sweet potatoes!

On a side note I have discovered many, many long-lost comments in my spam folder. I didn’t know they were there and now feel so much blog love! In the next few days I will answer the questions in the various posts. Thanks for being such kind readers! I feel connected to fellow gardeners like me that just want to grow something. My garden and this blog has certainly been a fun journey for me. Best wishes to all and happy gardening!

Also: today is the last day of the Mother’s Day Contest. Drawing tonight at midnight. Please forward this link to anyone that might want to give their mom a garden for Mother’s Day! Five lucky winners will win the plans to build it.

How To Brick Garden Border

Both concrete and brick pavers make a simple, handsome border and work well as edging material too. They're ideal when you want a wide border that keeps grass out of the garden, yet allows flowers and other plants to spill over without intruding onto the grass. You're less likely to chop them up with the lawn mower.
